What a night I had on sat last at the B52 in Evergem..where's that you might say..near the Belgian coast is all I can remember.
The Hellies and War Risk III
What a great night I had and also to meet some super people.Better still to hear some wonderfull music,both bands were well worth driving over two hours to see.
Ladies,Gentlemen and Punks I present to you 'The Hellies'I chatted to David and Annie before they went on stage,they are fun,charming and happy people.What a joy to see wonderfull smiles.I'm telling you after a day of driving and seeing miserable faces it was heaven to meet happy people raring to go on stage and play.On top of this to not get paid and travel as far as me to a small club to give all they've got to an enthusiastic small crowd.Things could only get better and they did!!
The Hellies,punk at it's best rough,raw and in your face.Yet precise and delivered loud and clear.If Punk ever goes sweet,god forbid,Annie Hellie will be its new Princess.Offstage she is sweet and laughing with you.Onstage here we are, take this if you dare.Not just three pretty faces onstage,Punk at its best.Gabba gabba hey style,three members,three chord rythms,all I can say is 'pure punk perfection'.Catchy songs such as my favourite 'Bedtime Stories,I.T. and Wendy.Check them out on myspace..
The following band War Risk 3,another excellent band,rougher ,tougher and raw.Ooo political rougues,yes,punk perverts,yes.And a lot more besides.There was not a lot of room on stage or of it for this band.Lead singer,Wim has the look itself,deranged and desperate to deliver,and my god he does.The guy is on his own planet amongst jokers like Fab and Cartouche.This guy gets respect,approach the stage at his invitation only!This is a well oiled team,among the jokes and band banter the music is well delivered and precise.I loved the bass harmonies by P,what a joy to to listen to.D.Dee I could listen to his passion for athletics and Triathlon,quiet spoken and timid.Then behind the drums he is a one man show himself,the passion comes out here too.Sorry for pulling a joke on you it was too hard to resist..Great songs like 'Wake Up Call' and 'Looking For a Home'.Also one which was fun to hear live was 'Thank you Mr President'.Few bands are as good live as they are on cd,if you miss the chance to see these guys you will miss political incorrectness at its best.Social problems and political injustice are at the core of this band, remind me of The Clash in many ways.How better to make a point,through music!
This is a fantastic band of musicians,who have a message within thier songs,who interact onstage and off it with the public.This is why I love seeing bands live,who just want to play good live music.Bands who litteraly struggle to play,no money,not many people at stage front and miles and miles to play in small venues and still deliver a great show.War risk 3 and The Hellies,wonderfull bands to listen and see live.It saddens me to think that the majority of Belgian bands have to make it elswhere in Europe and not at home.So if you see either of these bands at a venue near you go and hear for yourselves..
